As Moondance became a radio fixture, Van Morrison cut Astral Weeks, a stranger, looser wildcard record riding on the former's glory, though still bound to his then-favourite New York dormer studios, and here with new jazzist guests: bassist Richard Davis and drummer Connie Kay. It coasts somewhere between folk, jazz improv and something harder to pin down, Morrison half-singing, half-declaiming lines on 'Cyprus Avenue', 'Madame George' and 'Sweet Thing', flute and vibraphone twanging in the accompaniment register. It didn't sell much at the time but gradually became one of Morrison's most discussed records, and like the Moondance version, this Analogue Productions edition revisits it as a 24/192 transfer of the original master tape.
