Check out my auctions this week for some awesome and very unique acetates, including a very rare Diana Ross and the Supremes acetate! Here’s a fascinating 12 inch Motown acetate with Brenda Holloway on one side, and Stevie Wonder on the other. The Brenda Holloway side has what sounds (to me) like five different complete mix attempts of the song “Till Johnny Comes”. This song, written by Smokey Robinson, was to be part of Holloway’s 2nd LP for Motown, entitled “Hurtin’ and Cryin”. The release was eventually cancelled, and the song was not released until nearly 40 years later. The label has what appears to be a date of 12-6-66. Each mix attempt begins with the engineer or producer calling out the song title and the number (one through five) of the mix. Then a countoff is heard by one of the original studio musicians, and the song begins. Side two of the acetate is part of Stevie’s “Down to Earth” LP. Here’s the running order of the songs… notice a completely different sequence from the original LP: Mr. Tambourine Man, Down To Earth, Angel Baby, That Lonesome Road, My World Is Empty Without You, Be Cool Be Calm. The acetate has general wear and scuffing, probably in the VG- range. It plays without skipping, though the usual expected noise is present. This acetate is a fascinating look at some of the inner workings of the Motown company in late 1966! Good luck! Drop me a message if ebay doesn’t calculate shipping for you.
