Whatever happy pills Bob Mould was chucking down his throat when releasing Sunshine Rock last year have clearly worn off in 2020. Which is no surprise, considering the world feels more like it is teetering on the bring of catastrophe now than at any point since the end of the Cold War. Thankfully, then, the former-Husker Du rocker has remembered that it's at times like this - backs to the wall, lunatics in office, riots and lockdowns on the streets - that we really need his restless and uncompromising take on the way things are.
So while the preceding album was upbeat, almost optimistic, here we revert back to the kind of wry critiques of political skullduggery, societal flash points and failings Mould is best known for. It's vicious, angry, frustrated and - in the case of tracks like the appropriately titled juggernaut 'American Crisis' - frantic rock music with more than a few shades of punk and metal thrown in for added intensity.
