MUDDY WATERS ''THE BEST OF'' 1964 1st UK PRESSING CAT NO. NPL.28040 ON THE PIE INTERNATIONAL LABELS! EARLIEST -1M -1M MATRIX ENDINGS!! AWESOME TOP AUDIO! WITH THE ORIGINAL 1ST ISSUE LAMINATED FRONT, FLIPBACK GARROD & LOFHOUSE PRINTED COVER!!! VERY RARE UK 1ST BLUES ALBUM!!!!
Another from my personal collection. This album was originaly released in the US on the Chess Labels, and in the UK on the Pie International Labels!! This is the original 1st UK pressing released in 1964 an unbeleivable 44 years old!! In my opinion this is a very respectable copy in at least excellent condition, becoming very, very hard to ever find in this condition and extreemely collectable indeed! The original laminated fron Garrod & Lofthouse flipback cover is graded at least excellent condition also very hard to find like this, exceptionaly clean! The vinyl has obviously been played a few times but amaizingly the audio is truly stunning throughout, very vibrant and enjoyable, free from skips or jumps and definately no distortion or grooveware, so often found on these 60s originals! I have played the vinyl through four times very carefully on a top system using a dedicated mono cartridge and I would say this is a very enjoyable and playable record, with just very light interfearance on side 2 only in the form of light static crackle\ticks, I heard no loud clicks or pops and (no) didtortion or grooveware! (Please remember that some of the tracks on this album were taken from a much earlier recording, which would atribute to some background noise that may be heard) A very respectable playable copy in my opinion!! I would class myself as highly critical when it comes down to the audio quality, Please look at my completed listings of records that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normaly get it right!!I have graded the audio quality as side 1. excellent to excellent plus and side 2 as excellent!!
Muddy Waters.
McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1915 – April 30, 1983), better known as Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician and is generally considered "the Father of Chicago blues". He is also the actual father of blues musicians Big Bill Morganfield and Larry "Mud Morganfield" Williams. A major inspiration for the British beat explosion in the 1960s!!
The 1920 census lists him as five years old as of March 6, 1920, suggesting that his birth year may have been 1914. The Social Security Death Index, relying on his Social Security card application, lists him as being born April 5, 1915!.
His grandmother Della Grant raised him after his mother died in 1918. His fondness for playing in mud earned him the nickname "Muddy" at an early age. He later changed it to "Muddy Water" and finally "Muddy Waters". Waters started out on harmonica but by age seventeen he was playing the guitar at parties emulating two blues artists who were extremely popular in the south, Son House and Robert Johnson. "His thick heavy voice, the dark coloration of his tone and his firm, almost solid, personality were all clearly derived from House," wrote music critic Peter Guralnick in Feel Like Going Home, "but the embellishments which he added, the imaginative slide technique and more agile rhythms, were closer to Johnson!!
Initially, the Chess brothers would not allow Waters to use his own musicians in the recording studio; instead he was provided with a backing bass by Ernest "Big" Crawford, or by musicians assembled specifically for the recording session, including "Baby Face" Leroy Foster and Johnny Jones. Gradually Chess relented, and by September 1953 Waters was recording with arguably the best blues group ever: Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica; Jimmy Rogers on guitar; Elga Edmonds (a.k.a. Elgin Evans) on drums; Otis Spann on piano; and Waters on vocals and second guitar. The band recorded a series of blues classics during the early 1950s, some with the help of bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon, including "Hoochie Coochie Man" (Number 8 on the R&B charts), "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (Number 4), and "I'm Ready". These three were "the most macho songs in his repertoire," wrote Robert Palmer in Rolling Stone. "Muddy would never have composed anything so unsubtle. But they gave him a succession of showstoppers and an image, which were important for a bluesman trying to break out of the grind of local gigs into national prominence.!
Waters, along with his former harmonica player Little Walter Jacobs and recent southern transplant Howlin' Wolf, reigned over the early 1950s Chicago blues scene; Waters' band became a proving ground for some of the city's best blues talent. While Waters and Jacobs continued a collaborative relationship long after Jacobs left Muddy's band in 1952, with Jacobs appearing on most of Muddy's classic recordings throughout the 1950s, Muddy developed a long-running but generally good-natured rivalry with Wolf. Wolf's band, like Muddy's, featured an all-star lineup, including the now-legendary guitarist Hubert Sumlin. Wolf also competed with Waters for the songwriting attention of Willie Dixon and recorded a number of Dixon tunes. Both Waters and Wolf are held in immense regard by modern rock and blues aficionados, but Waters scored far more chart hits and is the better known of the two, especially to casual listeners!
!
By 1954, Waters was at the height of his career. "By the time he achieved his popular peak, Muddy Waters had become a shouting, declamatory kind of singer who had forsaken his guitar as a kind of anachronism and whose band played with a single pulsating rhythm,"
The success of Waters' ensemble paved the way for others in his group to break away and enjoy their own solo careers. In 1952 Little Walter left when his single "Juke" became a hit, and in 1955 Rogers quit to work exclusively with his own band, which had been a sideline until that time. Although he continued working with Waters' band, Otis Spann enjoyed a solo career and many releases under his own name beginning in the mid-1950s. Waters could never recapture the glory of his pre-1956 years as the pressures of being a leader led him to use various studio musicians for quite a few years thereafter!
Waters headed to England in 1958 and shocked audiences (whose only previous exposure to blues had come via the acoustic folk/blues sounds of acts such as Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and Big Bill Broonzy) with his loud, amplified electric guitar and thunderous beat. His performance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival, recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960, helped turn on a whole new generation to Waters' sound. He expressed dismay when he realized that members of his own race were turning their backs on the genre while a white audience had shown increasing respect for the blues.!

The Vinyl
The vinyl
This is the original thick and chunky, heavier type of vinyl (only found like this on original 1st pressings)! The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free from warps or uneveness! On initial inspection the playing surface looks awesome and retains its original sheen from new! Only when looked at angled under a strong light can any blemishes be noticed, just very light suface scuffs\very light needle scratches can possibly be seen, fortunately these have very little effect on the awesome audio quality that I heard!
The Audio quality
I have very carefuly played this vinyl using a dedicated mono cartridge, on a top system at very loud volume, very carefully, four times prior to listing! The first thing to note, is that the audio is truly vibrant throughout, cristal clear without any signs of distortion or that this has been overplayed what so ever! Importantly I heard (no) loud clicks or pops and certainly no skips or jumps! Please note on side 2 there were some light static crackle\ticks that may be heard during a couple of tracks but like I have mentioned earlier some of this could have been attributed to the recording taken from a much earlier recording, because this is not consistant throughout the vinyl! Please note! My main interest and hobby is the audio quality on vinyl. My grading is based the audio quality. My audio grading is at least excellent to excellent plus for side 1 and excellent for side 2. Free from any distortion or signs of grooveware and certyainly no skips or jumps!
Pease note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd very light static crackle\ticks, (not consistant throughout the audio) Please remember that this is an original 45 year old vinyl that would have originally been played on a 45 year old system!
This vinyl has been stored in a case, laying dormant for at least 25 years or more. A constant clean before play is recomended! A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves from laying dormant in a case causes static\crackle\ticks a contant cleaning reduces this and enhances the audio quality!
The Labels
These are the original 1st UK issue Pie International labels Spidering can be seen angled to the light, this has obviously been played but there is little if no spindle ware the hole is perfectly round!
The Record Sleeve
This is a plain white poly lined sleeve
The Cover
This is the original Garrod & Lofthouse flip back cover (laminated front only) This is in absolutely superbe condition for 45 years old! Just minor\superficial laminate creases to talk of front top left, and very minor storage ware to the corners in general nice and strong and straight! There are (no) splits or tarres! Superbe spine all writing is legable! The rear is exceptionaly clean, any staining or fading you really have to look hard to notice! Super glossy appearance! Very rare like this this must grade at least excellent!
