Description
[IT WAS CLOUDY all week here in Sunny Southern California, so I had no chance to take pictures in the bright sunlight, as is my habit. Rather than subject you to a week of re-runs, I bit the bullet and took pictures indoors, with artificial light.]
IF NOTHING ELSE, this record by BOB BLAKE shows how lastingly influential BERT WILLIAMS was. Blake is doing a flat-out Bert Williams- style routine on each side of this rare 1926 red-label Gennett. He tackles some of the same subjects Bert was fond of - i.e., Prohibition, Taxes, Mean Legislators, mooching friends, et cetera - in a kind of Williams-ish drawling delivery.
On "MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE," Bob sings:
"They're takin' away the champagne from the white folks,
My beer saloon where lunch was always free;
But when they took away the gin from the colored man -
- - Uh oh! --
That was MURDER in the first degree!"
On "WHEN I GET BACK" he tells a moocher who needs five bucks to wait on the corner:
"...then I'd go over to Africa, take a cruise down the Nile,
Come back to New York, then spend a week east on the Southern Isles,
Then over to Alaska, and back to Hackensack - -
-- I told him I'd let him HAVE that five, just wait on that corner 'till I get back!"
HAROLD'S WANDERING WILLIES provide appropriately louche accompaniment.
This original 1926 red-label Gennett 3324 is in lovely and improbable EE+ condition. No wear or damage, a few pits and minor scuffs.
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
