Description

Folkways FD-5581, “Music in the Streets” compiled by Tony Schwartz, from 1957. The original DG vinyl plays at VG++ with little background sound. The jacket has practically no wear with strong seams, square corners, and no ringwear, bends, or writing; like many old Folkways LP jackets, there is considerable age toning, especially along the spine. Booklet with descriptive notes is included and in excellent condition. This, along with “New York 19”, is a Tony Schwartz masterpiece, consisting of impromptu recordings of street music and other street rhythms. It was recorded at a time when the Washington Square hoots were still young; when Rev. Gary Davis, not yet having been discovered, was playing on a corner of 125th St. in Harlem; and when Moondog was playing in the theater district. Bands include a lone saxophone player, a glass bowl player, the Carnegie Hall fiddler (Prof. Giuseppe Ravita), Gary Davis, a blind accordion player, Moondog, the Kossoy Sisters in Washgton Square, Ralph Rinzler, “When the Saints Go Marching In” played on spoons, “Deep Blue Sea” with Jane Soyer, “Another Man Done Gone” with Fred Gerlach. There are also church bells, a Salvation Army Band, a gospel singer, and some tracks of street festivals and parades. This is New York City in the 50s. Shipping is $4.00 media mail, $8.00 priority mail within the continental U.S.; $14.00 regular airmail to the U.K., Europe, Japan, Korea, and Australia; elsewhere inquire. Additional LPs in a single package are $1.00 per LP domestic, $2.00 elsewhere. For overseas shipments, registered mail for $11.75 extra is strongly recommended. (Last year, a package to the Netherlands was lost in shipment, resulting in disappointment on both sides.) Many old records are now practically antiques and should be treated that way. This LP will be packaged with special foam padding around all edges of the LP to prevent seam splitting and will be shipped inside a special oversized handcrafted mailer. It is designed thick enough not to be bent in transit and strong enough to withstand a drop from a second-story window. More than two LPs will be mailed together in a heavy Bags Unlimited pizza-style box. Your LP should arrive in the same condition as on the day it was shipped.
