Long before cheeky anthem 'Pass The Dutchie' sent Musical Youth to the top of the charts in 1982, the Birmingham group were already accomplished roots reggae musicians who had been schooled by their first frontman Frederick Waite of The Techniques, mentored by producer Toney Owens, and regularly playing alongside Sugar Minott and Jackie Mittoo during extended stays at Owens' house. This superb collection, arriving via music scribe Pete Paphides' excellent Needle Mythology label, combines the group's 1981 John Peel session with newly unearthed recordings that have been untouched for over 40 years. Highlights include a mind-blowing Jackie Mittoo collaboration featuring an 11-year-old Kelvin Grant on the mic, an extended mix and dub version of their debut single 'Generals/Political,' and an early version of 'Pass The Dutchie' recorded under its original title, 'Pass The Kouchie'. Real reggae history.
