Mahler: The 10 Symphonies. Concertgebouw, Haitink 16 LPs Boxed Set Philips Vinyl.
This is a Dutch imported set of the 10 symphonies completed by Mahler, so not the “completed” version of No 10, only those movements he finished.
These are Dutch pressings, always better than the English ones, in terms of surface noise and imperfections.
One of the records has a plain paper sleeve, without the liner, the rest are original.
There is NO booklet, I’m afraid, that long since vanished, just the 16 records.
The recording of No 1 is the 1972 issue, which I much prefer to the other Concertgebouw recording Haitink made of the work.
The surfaces are very clean and tidy, having been carefully owned from new and only played on a B&O parallel-tracking-arm turntable.
The box is used and shows it, the contents are a good deal better than the box outer cosmetics. The box is totally intact, however.
This isn’t a pristine box.
The set won an Edison Award and Haitink’s 1960s/70s traversal of the Mahler works has always been much admired, for some it is the one to go for if you only own one set.
Haitink’s approach is musical, thoughtful, superbly played and recorded in the fabulous acoustic of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. He isn’t as histrionic or emotional as Bernstein, or as dramatic as Solti, the other two leading sets from that time. He is better recorded than the Kubelik, less “glassy” in sound, very naturalistic.
This set is extremely hard to get hold of these days, and certainly not in the Dutch pressings.
This is strictly a UK-only sale, given the set weighs just over 2.5 kilos, no approaches to send outside the UK, please.
