Description
Mal Waldron (With Eric Dolphy & Booker Ervin) - The Quest
(Xtra Records XTRA 5006 UK Mono LP 1962)
This is a UK original Mono LP pressing. Although this LP was originally released in 1962, it did not get a UK release until 1966. This was on the UK "Transatlantic" off-shoot label "Xtra". This is, unfortunately, quite a well played copy. Nevertheless, it is still a serviceable audio copy. However, there are some issues with playback. Please see below for more details.
It has a heavyweight front laminated flipback sleeve. It comes with its original generic company plain paper inner sleeve. The record is pressed on thick vinyl & has textured white "Xtra" labels. It has 1st press XTRA 5006 A and XTRA 5006 B+ matrix numbers.
A classic early 1960's Hard Bop/ Free Jazz LP. This is the rare UK 1st pressing. I have some other rare & collectable 1960's, early 1970's UK & USA LP's for sale too. This includes some other Eric Dolphy LP's. So please see my other listings.
Sleeve: There is mild to more moderate rubbing wear to the corner tips. There is a 1 cm area of moderate rubbing wear at the top of the spine. There is light or very mild fading to the "white" of the front sleeve to a varying degree. There is mild fading to the rear sleeve. There is mild, very mild or more moderate rubbing wear on the sleeve opening edges on some areas. This is not too noticeable. There is a mild crease on the rear sleeve. There are about five small, in the main, laminate creases on the front. There is mild fading to the spine. The spine text is completely legible. There are a couple of small stains on the rear sleeve. There is some light, mild or very mild ringwear on some areas. Overall, Very Good minus condition
Vinyl: Firstly, there is a very noticeable 7 cm surface scratch mark, or surface scuff mark, across two-thirds of Side 2. I have taken a photo of this mark, so hopefully you will be able to see it. It is quite a bit thicker than a hairline mark. However, it doesn't really feel to the touch. It does, however, cause some mild to very minor intermittent clicks for some period. It is, in the main, very much in the background. It does not jump. Please see below for a more thorough playback description.
Apart from the aforementioned noticeable scratch/ scuff mark on Side 2. There is one other very mild 3.5 cm hairline surface mark on Side 2. There is a quite long, but quite feint, 10 cm hairline surface rub mark on Side 1. There are light, mild. very mild or more moderate sleeve rubs, or surface rub marks, which can only be seen under a strong light. Side 1 is in Very Good minus condition. Side 2 is in Good condition. Overall, Good condition. The labels are in Very Good+ condition & show mild or more moderate spindle wear. The company paper inner sleeve is in Very Good condition. There is some light, mild or very mild ringwear, fading, staining & creasing. There are no seam splits.
I have fully play tested this LP. As stated, there is a noticeable 7 cm surface scratch mark, or surface scuff mark, across two-thirds of Side 2. This causes some light, mild, very mild or very minor intermittent clicks for approximately 3 minutes & 30 seconds. This is not all in one area. The clicks return & then fade out in a couple of areas. The clicks are, in the main, very much in the background. They do not detract too much from playback. It does not jump. Ovearll, Side 2 plays Good+ to Very Good overall & Very Good+ in many places. There is some light, mild , very mild or very minor crackle in some quieter places.
Side 1 plays Very Good to Very Good+ overall & Near Excellent in some places. There is some light, mild, very mild or very minor crackle in some quieter places. There are some intermittent light or very mild clicks a quarter of the way through Side 1. This is in a couple of areas. They do not last too long. They are very much in the background. Apart from the aforementioned issues, this is still a very serviceable audio copy of this rare Jazz LP.
