"MALEVOLENT CREATION have been so criminally underrated that it really does seems criminal."(Metal Archives) Landing a deal with Roadrunner Records and helping to develop the "Florida Death Metal" sound. In 1991 their debut album, "The Ten Commandments" became something of a landmark in the death metal underground, expanding on the early work of bands like SLAYER, KREATOR, POSSESSED, OBITUARY and DEATH. "The Ten Commandments is an excellent example of high quality death metal." - Sputnikmusic.com Also produced by Scott Burns, released in April 1992 and built on a relentless riffage madness, following and second album "Retribution" is often hailed as one of the best and most definitive death metal albums of all time. Keeping up with the insane velocity of their previous material, "Stilborn" was released in October 1993, often criticized for its sterile production, it could be now regarded as a collection gathering some of the wildest and catchiest compositions the band has ever written. An Essential Florida death metal gem once again !.
Malevolent Creation's Retribution (1992) is a pivotal album that solidified their sound—a ruthless, riff-driven blend of death metal brutality and thrash metal precision.
Here is an extensive description of the album, followed by a list of 50 similar artists and albums.
Malevolent Creation - Retribution (1992) Description of the Album Retribution is the second studio album by Malevolent Creation, released in 1992 on Roadrunner Records. Produced and engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, the album is widely considered the band's magnum opus and one of the most uncompromising, pure examples of the early '90s death metal sound.
Musical Style: Precision Brutality
While their debut, The Ten Commandments, retained some crossover thrash elements, Retribution saw the band plunge fully into the death metal genre, defining a sound built on technical tightness and relentless aggression.
Riff-Driven Carnage: The core of the album is the tight, crushing rhythm guitar work of Phil Fasciana and new member Rob Barrett (later of Cannibal Corpse). The riffs are a masterclass in down-picked, tremolo-picked brutality, often shifting between blinding speed and groove-heavy, pit-inducing breakdowns. The guitar tone is raw, crusty, and perfectly suited for the era.
Unrelenting Rhythm Section: The introduction of drummer Alex Marquez (Solstice) elevated the band's precision. His drumming is a powerful, dynamic mix of relentless blast beats and complex, driving fills, providing an unyielding foundation. Bassist Jason Blachowicz anchors the low end with a percussive, aggressive presence.
Vocal Assault: Brett Hoffmann's (R.I.P.) vocal performance on this album is considered his finest. His growl is a signature force in death metal—ferocious, easily intelligible, and delivered with a relentless snarl that makes every lyric sound like a threat.
Key Tracks: The album kicks off with the explosive "Eve of the Apocalypse" (which famously incorporates the theme from Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer), followed immediately by the speed-thrash attack of "Systematic Execution". The title track and "Slaughter of Innocence" showcase the band's perfect balance of speed, groove, and technical riffing.
Aesthetic and Legacy
The album's iconic cover art, an arresting monstrosity of chaos and flesh, was created by the legendary metal artist Dan Seagrave, placing it firmly alongside other classics of the era (like albums by Entombed, Suffocation, and Morbid Angel). Retribution stands as a defining example of the Florida Death Metal sound that wasn't overly focused on technical wankery (like early Death) or gore-obsessed slam (like Cannibal Corpse), but on the pure, high-energy fusion of thrash precision and death metal brutality.
