Maestro Cándido Efraín Tánchez Ruiz (1924–1989) was a titan of Guatemalan music, a virtuoso who elevated the marimba from a folkloric symbol to a sophisticated orchestral instrument. Trained at the National Conservatory, Tánchez was a prolific composer and educator. Throughout his illustrious career, he directed several prestigious ensembles, including the Tánchez Hermanos Marimba Orquesta and his most celebrated commercial project: La Marimba Sonora Tropical. Under his direction, "Efraín Tánchez y sus Marimbas" became a synonym for elegance and rhythmic precision across Central America.
