A Souvenir of the Edinburgh International Festival 1959

Excerpts from recordings of Johanna Martzy, Wilhelm Kempff, the Loewenguth Quartet, Wolfgang Schneiderhan and others.

This is quite an interesting item, albeit less so for its actual musical contents.

To advertise their products, DGG sometimes compiled some of their own studio recordings to showcase artists

from their roster when those were invited to important musical events, in this case the 1959 Edinburgh Festival.

These compilations did actually not contain any live recordings from the festivals themselves.

This is all the more obvious for this release as it still names Johanna Martzy with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on the

label, when in reality the Orchestra refused to accompany Martzy at the last moment for her alleged political affinities with

the Hungarian regent, nazi sympathizer Miklos Horthy. The third movement of Dorak's Violin Concerto which makes up the

biggest part of side 2 is thus in fact from the famous recording she did with Fricsay and the RIAS Orchestra a couple of years before.

It's not unlikely that the refusal of the Czech Orchestra has been the very reason this recording has never been officially released in Germany.

Only white label pressings like the one for sale were available for radio stations and dealers for a short time span,

assumably only before the festival had taken place.

There must, however, have been at least a couple of copies with actual printed covers that were given away to visitors of

the Festival in 1959, as one of those appeared on ebay in 2020.

The only other copies ever sold (at least those that can be found on the web) were two white label pressings such as the one

for sale now, which were auctioned at ebay in 2009 resp. 2012.

The information on Martzy is not the only thing that went wrong, by the way, you'll see that this was erroneously labelled a

stereo recording, although it clearly is mono.

Looks as if there was an attempt by the distributor to correct this by garbling the word "stereo" with blue pen before it was sent out.

While it's certainly fair to say that this is not among the musically most interesting Martzy-records out there, it surely is one of the rarest!

Issued in a simple white sleeve.

• Condition Vinyl: VG+ to EX. Some faint hairline marks and paperscuffs. Plays great with minor surface noise.

A note about my record-grading:

I usually only visually grade the LPs under strong light and I only playgrade them ( i.e. the portions that seem to have signs of usage), if I can't be sure of their actual condition.
If records show stronger signs of soiling I'll professionally clean them (Okki Nokki RCM), but I'm not doing this if it's obviously only dust, as I know that collectors usually prefer their
very own way of record-cleaning.

My goal is to always decribe the records appropriately and I will name every visible and/or audible defect in my detailed description. If regardless of my precautions
you should ever be dissatisfied with the condition of a record, please contact me before leaving negative or neutral feedback to give me the chance to resolve your query.
I'm confident, however, that this will hardly ever be the case. I've been selling records for many years now and so far complaints fortunately have been the utter exception!
