During the sixties Motown Records discovered many soul superstars and legends, but from these the late Marvin Gaye was perhaps the greatest of the soul singers. He had a unique way of touching the souls of his listeners with a voice that caressed and was often anguished , soul-searching and self-absorbed. He also brought an intensity to his music that reflected his volatile personality and troubled personal life.
On offer is undoubtedly, not just his greatest album, but among the greatest pop albums of all time. Released in 1971, 'What's Going On' virtually remodeled R&B and completely broke with the traditional "sound" of Motown music and ultimately established a matrix for what R&B became in the Seventies. Amazing to think that Gaye actually had to fight to convince Berry Gordy of Motown Records to release it. Gordy later admitted that the music simply baffled him and the scope and levels of ideas completely escaped him. Produced entirely by Gaye himself, 'What's Going On' became an epic song cycle on which Gaye weaves his observations about inner city youth, the ecology, and race relations.
The copy offered in this listing is the very desired 2017 Half-Speed Mastered release by UMG and was mastered at Abbey Road Studios by the highly regarded mastering engineer, Miles Showell. No [digital] limiting was used as Miles endeavored to keep everything as close as possible to the sound of the Original Master Tape. Housed in a hard card slipcase, the four 180g records are the best possible way to enjoy and appreciate this widely acclaimed masterpiece. I've heard an opened copy and the breadth and detail in the music is absolutely stunning.
