Description

Here is a set of two studio acetates containing unreleased tracks by the legendary Oakland bandleader Marvin Holmes and (presumably) his band circa 1969-1971, the Uptights. The tracks include a completely different version of the monstrous workout “Day of Rest” than the one that has been released, and an unknown funk number called “Walk Black.” Audio from both sides is linked below. There are a couple of mysteries I can’t account for here: first, the label for “Day of Rest” has “By Blue’s Crusaders" printed under the title, but it’s obviously from the same session as the released version of “Day of Rest” that’s been attributed to the Uptights. Secondly, the labels are from United Recording studio in Las Vegas; maybe the band was in Vegas to support its UNI label LP and decided to do some recording--who knows?

I’ve uploaded audio for this alternate version of “Day of Rest” here. You can compare it to the version that was released here. Note that the released version contain no vocals in the intro, unlike this one. There are numerous other differences too, including all of the vocal tracks.

I've uploaded the other track “Walk Black” here. As far as I know, this one was never released in any form.

Both discs play beautifully, but do have visible scuffs and scratches.
