'The Hunter', das heißersehnte neue Werk der Progressive-Legenden Mastodon ist das fünfte Studioalbum der Band und das erste, das außerhalb von Nordamerika über Roadrunner Records erscheinen wird. Drummer Brann Dailor über 'The Hunter': 'When you listen to the songs, they don't sound as 'fun' as we perceive them to be, I guess; it's still pretty extremely heavy material. There's, like, 13 songs that we recorded. And it's sort all over the place - a lot of different sounds. Some straight-up classic-rock-sounding songs, straight-up death metal-sounding songs and some completely bizarre, weirdo rock songs that we're not really sure what they are, but we love them.' Aufgenommen wurde der Nachfolger des gefeierten 'Crack The Skye' von 2009 in den Doppler Studios in Atlanta mit Produzent Mike Elizondo. Drummer Brann spielte seine Parts bereits im Vorfeld in den legendären Sound City Studios in Los Angeles ein, wo bereits NIRVANA's ,Nevermind' entstand. Für das Motiv des ungewöhnlichen, aber ansprechenden Coverartworks zeigt sich der Bildschnitzer AJ Fosik verantwortlich, der in der Vergangenheit bereits die Live-Backdrops der Band kreierte. Somit vertraute die Band ihr Cover zum ersten Mal nicht Paul Romano an, wie auf allen bisherigen Veröffentlichungen. Mastodon sind als großartige Live-Band bekannt, was sie im Juni & Juli diesen Jahres mit gefeierten Shows u.a. bei Rock am Ring / Rock im Park sowie diversen Headliner-Shows, und in der Vergangenheit u.a. als Support von SLAYER unter Beweis stellten.[cargo]
