Stunning taarab double-sider recorded in early '70s Mombasa (Kenya) and released on the tiny Pwani label. Swahili lyrics based in centuries-old poetry and music based on Zanzibar's taarab tradition, regional percussion rhythms, Bollywood melodies and much more into the mix for something truly unique, from a musical scene that is sadly no longer around. This week I am offering a couple of titles from Pwani and Saba Saba records, in superb (stock) condition! There are only a few copies of each of these known, so make sure you get them now. This is real gold (1st copy offered online though!), from my favorite taarab group of 1970s Kenya: Orchestre Morning Star, led by Matano Juma. Musicologist John Storm Roberts wrote about them in an article from the mid '70s, as he saw them perform live with a full band set-up - using a full drum kit, organ etc was not that usual for taarab bands in Mombasa during that time. The b-side of this single, 'Kifa kifanana', shows how versatile taarab was as it sounds as a cross breed between soul, garage pop, Bollywood and more traditional taarab sounds. B-side features a prominent violin and an interesting rhythm. Check out the snippets below. Offers welcome!
