Matt Monro - On Days Like These - 1969 UKCapitol 45 - THE ITALIAN JOB THEME. If you’ve ever seen the opening scene ofThe Italian Job, you’ll never forget it. A clear blue day over the Alps, the sound of a high performance enginein the distance, then as the camera pans down to the road, a Lamborghini Miura P400, finished in MiuraOrange, comes into shot, winding its way at speed through the pass. The introduction of the Don Black and QuincyJones song ‘On Days Like These’ wells up and Matt Monro can be heard crooningthe opening lines in Italian, before switching back to his native English. Four minutes of classic supercar heaven. If you’ve not seen it, then I don’t want tospoil what happens at the end of the song, but you can see the entireintroduction to the film here:
https://mycarheaven.com/2016/05/4-minutes-of-bliss-the-opening-scene-from-the-1969-italian-job-featuring-lamborghini-miura/Condition is Good Plus (G+) [RRPG grading].There are quite a few pops and clicks in the opening section and light cracklethroughout. Produced by George Martin, this is one of the greatest singles never to have been a hit, in either the UKor USA. When released in late 1969 itfailed to make even the top 50 in the UK singles charts. The song never appeared on any Matt Monroalbums of the period, only showing up in 1974 on ‘The Very Best Of Matt Monro –20 Fabulous Tracks on Columbia records, going to MFP in 1978.
This particular copy has EMI stamper codes 1R /2R, making it one of the first 2,000 pressed at the EMI Hayes pressing plant in1969 and because it sold so poorly, this is probably all that were made withthe original black Capitol label. Therecord was re released in the early 1970s with the orange Capitol label, butstill failed to make any impression on the UK singles chart. This is a rare UK45 in its original Magenta Capitol die cut company sleeve, advertising CapitolLPs of the period on the back side.
