ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP – quite rare in the lovely white/gold pressing – from Columbia (SMC 95059, German EMI pressing, white/gold label – ED1, stereo, glossy front laminated jacket) features three Concertos by Michael Haydn, all recorded with conductor Jean-François Paillard and his magnificent chamber orchestra at the Église Saint Michel des Batignolles, Paris, in February 1963, with some of the very finest French soloists of the last century.

The exact contents are as follows:

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra in D Major

> with Maurice André, trumpet

Concerto for Horn and Orchestra in D Major

> with Georges Barboteu, horn

Concerto for Viola, Organ and Orchestra in C Major

> with Marie-Thérèse Chailley, viola and Marie-Claire Alain, organ

This is sparkling inventive and memorable music that deserves a much wider audience and it would be quite difficult to improve upon the effervescent, brilliant performances heard here.

Incidentally, the are insightful and eloquent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Ekkehart Kroher, printed in both German and English. The colorful reproductions on the front cover are uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minuscule bumping at corners, as well as very discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD+. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is excellent.  However, those wanting flawless or near-MINT surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
