By the end of the 80s, Liverpool's Paul McCartney sounds newly alert and as if something has jolted him out of autopilot. There's a sense of him testing the edges again, helped in no small part by those co-writes with Elvis Costello, whose phrasing cuts a bit sharper than McCartney usually allows himself. 'My Brave Face' lands bright and immediate, melodies stacking up fast, while 'You Want Her Too' leans into that back-and-forth tension between the two writers. 'Put It There' pulls everything right down, voice and acoustic, almost stubbornly simple. Elsewhere, 'Figure Of Eight' pushes into a heavier, more worked arrangement, and 'This One' smooths it back out again.
