Description
A lot of people cite this album as the true successor to In the Court of the Crimson King ... but at the time few were aware of its existence, waving their copies of In the Wake of Poseidon as tangible proof that Mcdonald and Giles didn't exist. McDonald and Giles, eh ... some 'unknown duo' unable to dream up a sexy band name. So they sold zilch. But McDonald and Giles were far more than the sum of their parts. In fact multi-instrumentalist MacDonald was so versatile Pete Sinfield thought he'd "found Mozart" when he first encountered him (Record Collector magazine, issue 317).
And indeed 'McDonald and Giles' is an extraordinary album, Five lovely tracks, one stretching the whole of Side 2. That's Birdman, 'involving' (not 'including', you'll note [ha ha]) The Inventor's Dream, The Workshop, Wishbone Ascension, Birdman Flies!, Wings in the Sunset and Birdman - The Reflection. In short Side 2's Birdman is a 20-minute trip. You take off, you're flying high, they bring you back down again. It's not just a piece of music - it's an experience. Light a joss stick, turn the lights off, turn the sound up, lie down and listen ... it's transcendental.
This particular original 1970 copy of 'McDonald and Giles' is another original UK pink Island vinyl LP first pressing (ILPS-9126) - that's one catalogue number BEFORE In the Wake of Poseidon.
The vulnerable unlaminated gatefold cover is a sturdy and reasonably presentable VG- (UK Record Collector grading) apart from a small sticker tear top right of the front cover, some edgewear top and bottom, some slight ringwear on the rear and some spinal rubbing.
The first pressing vinyl is also in VG- (VG minus) condition with lovely clean labels and a couple of visible but non-feelable marks which do not intrude on the aural experience.
This original vinyl lies perfectly flat on the turntable and plays beautifully.
As you can see from my pictures I'm having to sell off my treasured record collection … the collectors among you will immediately see there are some goodies to come. I'm listing them as soon as I can …
