ABOUT THE ALBUM Yerself Is Steam is the 1991 debut album by Mercury Rev. The title is a malapropism of the phrase "Your self-esteem," In 2016, Pitchfork ranked the album at number 16 in its list of "The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of All Time," commenting that "Yerself Is Steam is really a shoegaze album in the inverse: Where their fuzz-pedaling peers obliterated the human presence in rock music through a cloud of distortion, Mercury Rev foregrounded the claustrophobic, panicky unease of being trapped inside it."
ABOUT THE ARTIST Mercury Rev is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in Buffalo, New York. With their early records, Mercury Rev offered experimental, psychedelic rock, which gradually shifted to a melodic, ornate sound. At the time of this album the band had a large underground cult following of 'those in the know', although they did eventually achieve mainstream success when the UK's NME magazine made Deserter's Songs their Album of the Year in 1998 and the album spawned three UK Top 40 singles. Mercury Rev is often compared to The Flaming Lips with whom they shared close ties.
CONDITION and GRADING This is a Used/Vintage item, any notable faults and flaws are listed here and the photos show any wear or imperfections in more detail. Condition Grading is based on the US 'Goldmine' and UK 'Record Collector' Grading Scales. DISC: VG+ (Very Good Plus) - glossy, one or two light marks which don't affect playback sound. Label on side A has an irregular ring of flawed texture in the glaze on the paper which looks less smooth and more matte than the rest of the label when examined at an angle in strong light - it seems to be a factory flaw. SLEEVE: VG (Very Good) - there is ringwear front and back, some scuffing and shelfwear on edges and corners, original 90s 'Our Price Records' price sticker present at top right of front I have graded this item conservatively and to the best of my ability but Record Condition Grading is not an exact science and can be subjective - ZOOM IN ON THE PHOTOS FOR EXACT DETAILED CONDITION before buying.
