Description

SR 90225, BRAHMS, Concerto in D Major for Violin and Orchestra OP.77, Joseph Szigeti (Violin), Herbert Menges, London Symphony Orchestra, FR1/FR1 (I) Indianapolis pressing. This is NOT a reissue – it is the original 50+ year old, FR1/FR1 pressing. It is my favorite of all the recordings of the Brahms concerto for both its sound and interpretation. The violin sound is magnificent – large, warm and detailed, with great dynamics.  But what I like most is the hall sound of the orchestra, particularly the pizzicato and bass parts in the third movement.  This is my own personal copy, and the vinyl surfaces are clean, glossy and quiet EXCEPT for about 10 tics on each side. These are caused by two small (1/8 inch) nicks in the vinyl – one on each side.  There are also some light scuff marks, particularly on side 1, but these make little or no sound, as far as I can tell.  I am grading this copy as EX? primarily because of the tics and the scuffs described above.  Other than that, it plays NM.  The labels are clean with light spindle wear (see photos). The jacket is clean with no marks, but one small corner scuff (see photos). Jacket grading is EX, and inner sleeve grading is EX as well.  Overall, this is a very nice copy of this beautiful golden age violin recording.
