Description

Four LP set showcasing the first four films in the famed Nyman/Greenaway collaboration of the 1980s/1990s. Covers these soundtracks:

  • The Draughtsman's Contract (40:41)
  • A Zed And Two Noughts (41:25) 
  • Drowning By Numbers (44:49)
  • The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (40:26) 

Nyman's formal, minimalist compositions were recorded before filming, and provided the pulsing rhythm for Greenaway's visceral and challenging visuals. Here, presented in a sumptuous, rarely available box set, featuring extensive sleeve notes, Venture Records release VEBN55, 1989. The outer box shows some signs of wear and storage, but the album sleeves and records inside are in extremely good condition - barely played. 

Credited with inventing the term 'minimalism', Nyman is a titan in modern classical music. He has had a distinguished career as a musicologist, writer and critic, as well as a composer and player. Following these soundtracks, he went on to write the music for The Piano, and more recently, his work has featured in the Gattaca and Man on Wire soundtracks. He has also completed numerous projects for theatre and opera, and extensive concert touring.
