Various – Mary Jane (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Genre: Rock, Pop, Stage & Screen Style: Psychedelic Rock, Soundtrack Year: 1967
referencing Mary Jane (LP, Album, Stereo) DT-5911
This is one of the many soundtracks Mike Curb was involved with for American International Pictures. His political career was halted by his democrat opponent bringing up the fact that, despite Curb's seventies' anti-drug stance, Curb himself made a lot of money on exploitation films in the late sixties' that glorified drug use.
Whatever. The film sounds like a real loser, with Fabian thrown into the mix. It gets worse. The always-annoying Mrs. Miller shows up on side two singing the title song, a paean to marijuana, but done much less cleverly than the Association's classic "Along Comes Mary". Why they would get Mrs. Miller to sing this song is beyond me. The connection may be that Sidewalk Records, Curb's label, was obviously affiliated with Capitol Records, whom recorded Mrs. Millers "hits" in the sixties. The telling "duophonic" (Capitol's fancy name for reprocessed stereo) designation and the catalog number are the dead give aways.
The music seems pretty innocuous...much like the film I would guess. What's truly funny about Mrs. Miller's contribution is that the 'Mary Jane' theme is included in a later Miller release, "Songs For Children". Since the 'evil weed' is gaining in respectability, maybe it all makes sense!
