THE HOLY GRAIL "JACK JOHNSON" PRESSING: 1A/1A PITMAN IN SHRINK
This is the definitive, "first-off-the-press" archive copy for the serious Miles Davis audiophile. While many copies of A Tribute to Jack Johnson circulate, it is exceptionally rare to find a true 1971 first-state copy with these specific identifiers in this condition.
THE MATRIX DETAILS (For the Audiophile): This copy was pressed at the Columbia Pitman, NJ plant (identified by the stamped "P" in the deadwax). Most importantly, both sides feature the coveted 1A stampers, signifying the very first lacquer cut from the master tapes.
-
Side 1: MAL 30455-1A (Stamped) P
-
Side 2: MBL 30455-1A (Stamped) P The sonic difference between a 1A Pitman and later mid-70s Santa Maria or Terre Haute cuts is night and day—this pressing is famous for its visceral bass response and John McLaughlin’s biting guitar clarity.
THE COVER VARIANT: This is the rare "Masterworks Transition" jacket. Note the S 30455 catalog number on the front/spine, paired with the KC 30455 labels. This only occurred during the first few weeks of production in 1971 as Columbia moved the album from the Masterworks series to the main pop/jazz line.
CONDITION:
-
Vinyl (EX/NM): Visual grade is EX/NM. Full original factory luster with zero "graying" or groove wear. No feelable marks or hairline scratches. Labels are pristine with no spindle trails.
-
Cover (EX): Still in the original factory shrink wrap (opened at the mouth). The shrink has protected the sleeve from ring wear and edge chipping for 50+ years. Corners are sharp; spine is perfectly legible.
-
Inner Sleeve: Includes original Columbia "The Inner View" company inner sleeve.
SHIPPING: I am a collector and ship with care. The record will be packed VERY WELL inside a custom record mailer with plenty of cardboard on both sides of the record.
