About the Album
Originally recorded in December 1957, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud was created by Miles Davis and his Parisian ensemble in a single late-night session. The music served as the soundtrack for Louis Malle’s French noir classic Elevator to the Gallows and is considered one of the first instances of a fully improvised jazz film score.
The result is a moody, atmospheric, and groundbreaking recording that showcases Miles Davis’ genius for space, mood, and tension. With its haunting trumpet lines, understated rhythm section, and noir-inspired atmosphere, the album became a cornerstone of both modern jazz and film scoring.
