ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fine 2LP gatefold set from Electrola · EMI (1 C187 - 81814, colored dog-in-stamp label, German pressing, mono – no stereo edition exists, original inner sleeves included) features Nathan Milstein’s legendary first traversal of Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006, originally recorded for Capitol and a Rosette winner of The Penguin Guide.
Although Milstein’s later set for DG has long been a staple of the catalog, his earlier cycle captures the great violinist at the very peak of his considerable powers, and rarely have these works sounded with such purity and unforced nobility.
They were set down at Capitol Studios, New York, as follows: Sonata No. 1 in G minor (26 & 31 March 1956), Sonata No. 2 in A minor BWV 1003 (27 December 1956), Sonata No. 3 in C Major BWV 1005 (5 + 16/17 March), Partita No. 1 in B minor BWV 1002 (6 February 1956), Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004 (23/24 March 1954), and Partita No. 3 in E Major BWV 1006 (28 December 1955).
The original Capitol pressings remain, of course, highly sought-after, but these performances have never sounded better than here, with Milstein’s richly refulgent tone afforded both greater presence and greater amplitude, in a warm, not over-resonant acoustic. Moreover, they are here quite beautifully packaged, the striking cover art within a beautiful laminate sheen. For this listener, the Electrola pressings are quite preferable to their various Capitol incarnations, and on offer here is a lovely, collector’s copy.
Writing of EMI’s CD re-issue of the complete set, ArkivMusic.com wrote in its review:
"Great violinists have always been drawn to the partitas and sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, many of them recording the works several times in their careers. Jascha Heifitz, Yehudi Menuhin, and Nathan Milstein have all essayed the Bach partitas throughout their illustrious careers. It's no wonder this music attracts musicians; it's filled with deep emotion, technical brilliance and boundless invention. Bach composed the works in 1720 at the age of 35, when he had assimilated the energetic Italian style of Vivaldi and the elegant French dance forms of Couperin. The partitas represent the pinnacle of solo music for the instrument.
"This recording by Milstein was produced from sessions that took place in the 1950s. Milstein's Bach is not for early-music purists or those who prefer an analytical approach to the music. Milstein plays with passion and stunning virtuosity. His double stopping in the "Preludio" to the Partita No. 3 is glorious and a high point of the disc. Milstein was very much the poet, and the profundity he brings to the famous "Chaconne" in the Partita No. 2 is legendary. This is essential listening."
Milstein's unfailingly beautiful tone and purity of intonation is allied to a supreme sense of architecture and a penetrating imagination. Even if you have another favorite set, there are so many felicitous touches and moments of insight throughout Milstein's cycle that it stands as one of the most majestic and highly individual accounts ever recorded – a landmark in these works' discographies. Moreover, he is afforded warm and vivid sound.
There are excellent liner notes on the interior panels of the gatefold jacket by Dr. Joachim W. Hartnack, printed in both German and English.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is GOOD+. There is a small bend/crease to the upper-right corner, bumping/wear at corners, edgewear, creasing, and shelfwear. On the plus side, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid and presentation worthy – overall, this still remains a decent copy.
The condition of the 2 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really these are fine copies and playback is superb. Those requiring flawless or near-MINT copies are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, these are excellent collector's copies.
