This lovely 3 LP box set – a superb collector’s copy – from Deutsche Grammophon (2709 047, German pressing, white circle label, stereo, full-size 12-page booklet included) features Nathan Milstein's majestic and deeply felt readings of Johann Sebastian Bach's Partitas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006 – landmarks in the Bach discography and among the supreme statements on record of these remarkable masterpieces for unaccompanied violin.
Winner of the prestigious Prix Mondial du Disque, the Prix de l'Union de la Presse Musicale Belge, and of a Grammy Award, Milstein's landmark set was taped in the warm acoustics of London’s Conway Hall during February 1973. DG's sound is superb, well capturing Milstein's distinctive sound, the violin not spolit nor too closely balanced, consistent throughout.
Included is a full-size 12-page booklet with extensive notes on the music in German (by Hans Elmar-Bach, Köln), English (Boris Schwarz, New York), and in French (by Claude Lehmann, Paris). The text also reproduces “A Conversation with Nathan Milstein” in which the great violinist is interviewed by Richard D. Freed (Rockville, Maryland). Incidentally, the handsome portrait of Milstein on the box front was taken by Siegfried Lauterwasser (Überlingen).
