Blue Station Jazz: Reference Audit Report
Milt Jackson & John Coltrane – Bags & Trane (Atlantic 1368) Authentic 1961 Mono First Pressing – Red/Purple "Bullseye" Label
At Blue Station Jazz, we provide "Reference Grade" vinyl audits on a J. Sikora Standard Max turntable with a DS Audio optical cartridge. This copy is a verified 1961 first-state production, featuring the "Ankh" (MGM) pressing plant signature in the deadwax.
Surface Quietness / Playback Background: [VG+ / VG++] This copy performs significantly better than its visual grade. The playback is remarkably quiet across the vast majority of the record, bordering on VG++ for most of the session. The only notable artifact is a series of continuous clicks on the final track of Side 1, lasting approximately 20–30 seconds. Aside from this brief passage, the background remains exceptionally stable and silent.
Sonic Fidelity / Mastering Presence: [A] An excellent representation of Tom Dowd’s legendary mono engineering. The instruments are rendered with strength and clarity; Milt Jackson’s vibes have a beautiful, bell-like transparency, and Coltrane’s tenor possesses a commanding low-end presence. The dynamics are sharp and engaging, offering a "live" feel that later re-channels lack.
Jacket Condition: Graded VG. Please note approximately 3 inches of heavy wear on the top seam and slight wear on the bottom right corner.
