Description
For the ultimate late 1970s punk collector this one needs no introduction.
A rare 7" yellow vinyl 45 rpm copy of the Horror Business EP by The Misfits
on the Plan 9 label from the days before compact disc was even thought of.
The Misfits were formed in Lodi, NJ, in 1977 by vocalist Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Caiafa, who performed under the name Jerry Only. Their name taken from Marilyn Monroe's final film, the Misfits added drummer Manny and recorded a guitar-less single, "Cough Cool" b/w "She," on their own Blank Records label (later changed to Plan 9). Manny was soon replaced by "Mr. Jim" Catania, and guitarist Frank "Franché Coma" LiCata joined up for the four-song 1978 EP Bullet, which featured a notoriously graphic image of John F. Kennedy being shot. Although recording sessions had been held for a full-length album, to be titled Static Age, no record company would accept the results, and whatever material was not subsequently issued on EPs languished in the vaults. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Horror Business EP
Plan 9 Records PL 1009 2nd pressing released August 1979
Sleeve: is VG+ with very little wear.Left and bottom seams are intact. The right side is completely open and doesn't look as if it were ever sealed except for a small glued area at top.
Includes original "haunted house" insert.
Labels: are clean and unmarked with a hint of light age soiling on side B
Vinyl: The disc has a slight manufacturing defect. It is missing a small 1 inch long area at the lead in on one edge. See the scan above marked with arrows for more detail. When I dubbed this to CD a couple of years ago I got an excellent copy and this did not affect playback except for needing to exercise some care when lowering the stylus into the lead in groove. Aside from that it is M- with no visible defects.
Matrix etchings are SP 1009 A and SP 1009 B. Aside from a little dust this is as clean as you are going to find.
The information below is from the excellent discography on www.misfitscentral.com
tracks: side A Horror Business side B 1. Teenagers From Mars 2. Children In Heat Format: 7" EP.
Pressing:
1st: Plan 9: PL1009 (June 26, 1979) 25 black vinyl copies with no sleeve. Most of these copies were distributed in a large, black, white, and purple Crimson Ghost envelope with a biography and band photograph. Some black vinyl copies were later sold among collectors using sleeves from the yellow vinyl pressing or the alternate sleeve.
2nd: Plan 9: PL1009 (August 1979) 2000 yellow vinyl copies (approximately 20 double A-sided).
Insert: Some yellow vinyl copies came with a haunted house insert with a bogus story to explain sounds that occurred during the recording:
"On February 28, 1979, the Misfits and a mobile recording unit entered an abandoned haunted house in northern New Jersey. They recorded and left. While mixing the tapes back at a NYC recording studio, strange voices and noises were heard in the background. No explanation of these sounds could be given by the band or the recording crew."
Session: [01//1979 C.I. Recording]
Notes: The pressing number of 5000 copies listed for this release on most discographies (including The Misfits Box Set) is incorrect. In June 1979, Glenn ordered 2000 yellow vinyl copies to be pressed from a record plant in NJ. When he was told that this did not meet the plant's minimum order for colored vinyl, Glenn had the pressing plates shipped to a plant on the west coast, but due to an incombatibility in plate sizes, pressing was delayed. However, Glenn had the plant press a quick batch of 25 copies to be given away at the band's upcoming 06/26/1979 show with The Damned. Meanwhile, Glenn had 2000 sleeves printed with a back cover featuring a group photo of the band. Due to the light coloring of the black ink on the back, Glenn decided to redo the sleeve. Most of the original sleeves were cut in half by Glenn and Bobby; the front covers were saved for use as promotional items, and the back covers were thrown away. Bobby saved about 20-30 uncut sleeves and more than 100 cut sleeves. Some uncut sleeves were also saved by Glenn and given to Barry Henssler of The Necros. Both Bobby and Barry began selling their sleeves in the late 1980s. The alternate sleeves were never folded, glued, or issued with vinyl. Some collectors have since replaced their regular sleeves with the alternate sleeve. The regular pressing of the EP, with the individual band member photos on back, was released in August 1979, arriving from the west coast in 20 boxes of 100 copies each. About 1 copy per box (roughly 20 in all) had A-side center labels on both sides.

Disclaimer: I am selling my 25+ year personal vinyl LP collection primarily as historic collector artifacts and, as I no longer have a turntable, am unable to make any guarantee about vinyl sound quality. All have been fairly well cared for. Some have been played extensively, some have been played very little. All grading is visual on a conservative scale. None has been played since 1988-89 except for recording to disc and some, or all, may require cleaning to remove dust or smudges prior to playback. Please email any questions prior to bidding. It is not my intention to deceive anyone about the quality of these items so, as I can no longer test play them, they are sold strictly as described, as is.
Please Note: I am now also listing lots from a friends collection. This lot originates from his extensive collection which spans the late 1960s through the late 1980s. All statements in the disclaimer above apply to this offering.
