Beverly Shaw
Beverly Shaw was born in Los Angeles in 1910. She started her career in San Francisco where she sang at lesbian bars such as Mona's and the Chi-Chi Club, while also driving a taxi. She moved back to Los Angeles in the early 1950s. She sang at the Flamingo Club before taking over Club Laurel. Located at 12319 Ventura Boulevard, Shaw's Club Laurel catered to the upscale gay community in the film industry. She ran the club and was the featured singer for 14 years, from 1954 to 1968. A sign in the window referred to her as "Miss Beverly Shaw, Sir", which she explained was inspired by Groucho Marx, who once called Tallulah Bankhead "Sir". She continued to perform after the club closed. Shaw died of cancer in 1990.
According the jacket notes (by Christopher Barton), Shaw is ... "reminiscent of the forcefulness and dynamic charm of Tallulah Bankhead, the luridness of Marlene Dietrich and the sense of humor of Hermione Gingold. Holding a gaily-spurious sort of court nightly now in her CLUB LAUREL, where Beverly is the obvious mistress of all she surveys, her devoted followers assemble to hear her sing, and often to be regaled by the frequent shafts of wit with she ruinously impales the unwitting and the overly-familiar;..."
