ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and rather rare LP from Philips (A 01160 L, German pressing, plum/silver Minigroove label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Dimitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in superlative performance of Borodin's Symphony No. 2 in B minor, recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York on 2 November 1953.
Filling out the disc is their equally captivating rendition of Tchaikovsky's Orchestra Suite No. 1 in D Major Op. 43, set down at the same venue on 18 October 1954.
Wrote the critic T.H. in his review for the February 1956 issue of The Gramophone: "A good performance of the Borodin Symphony that falls a little behind the earlier ones from a not entirely satisfactory recording. (Competition in both performance and recording of this work is very keen). I did a good deal of treble cutting and tried every adjustment I could think of, but even then found shrill trumpets in the first movement and was never able to get a general sound that would compete with the others. However, it did seem to improve as it went on, through an extremely quick, but well-played Scherzo, a notably sensitive slow movement and a good finale. But competition is so keen that I cannot pretend that I do not prefer earlier recordings.
"Of these, both the Kletzki and Dorati performances have the same general approach. Ansermet takes very broad speeds—the first movement, in particular, is taken at a much slower tempo than usual—but when I had got used to his conception I enjoyed it. The sound in all these three seems to me better contained.
"Tchaikovsky's First Suite, which has some very attractive things in it, is most welcome, and since I do not mean to imply that the recording of the Borodin is any less good than just below the best, may well make you interested in this disc. Why, I wonder, is the Tchaikovsky so infrequently heard? (And as to recordings, Nixa have now deleted the only earlier LP version). I enjoyed this performance greatly, and the recording seemed more agreeable all round. It certainly makes this a disc worth considering."
Incidentally, there are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in German only. The striking cover art is similarly uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping at corners, and minor creasing, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy and very attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
