"Music For A 20th Century Violinist" 3-LP BOXED SET IS STILL SEALED (Desto DC6435/37). The set features: Raph Shapey / Wallingford Riegger / John Cage / George Crumb / Peter Mennin / Morton Feldman / Michael Sahl / Henry Brant / Stefan Wolpe / Walter Piston / Roger Sessions / Milton Babbitt / Arthur Berger / Harvey Sollberger. The rare 1974 3-LP box set contains mostly atonal and experimental violin-centered works by American modern and postmodern composers, performed by Paul Zukofsky with Gilbert Kalish on piano. The program is based on a series of performances Zukofsky gave at Town Hall in New York. There are 14 pieces total, many of which bring in additional instrumentalists including Alvin Brehm on contrabass. The highlights are works by Feldman, Cage, Sessions, Babbitt, Crumb, Wolpe, and an eccentric experimental piece with music boxes by Brant (see the image below for all composition titles).
