Continuing the slow sell-off of my own Jazz collection, 2000 LPs accumulated over 50 years of buying and listening, culling and selling--those for sale now my own saved favorites, in other words. All those i bought new are at least Mint- and usually Mint, really. Any used ones in lesser condition, i'll describe. Today the rest of the Monk auctions...
Mint copy, #2442 of 7500 copies, long out of print, of the always-soughtafter four-record box set Mosaic MR4-101, the very first Mosaic box set, offering The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Thelonious Monk, 49 performances that form the bedrock of Monk's compositional (if not playing) career--sextets, quintets, and trios (Art Blakey present for four-fifths of them) plus one important quartet moment, essaying 23 or so of his most famous compositions, ranging from trio versions of Ruby My Dear and Well You Needn't to quintet versions of Epistrophy and Straight No Chaser, to that one quartet version of Misterioso (with Sonny Rollins). Anyone who doesn't know the importance of these sessions and this great box shouldn't be reading!
The fine book enclosed has photos by Francis Wolff and Herman Leonard plus essays by Mosaic co-founder Michael Cuscuna and a useful discography listing all Monk's regular recording sessions, for major labels anyway. (Inside this booklet is the Errata/Addenda sheet issued way back when.)
And as bonuses tucked inside the box, i'm adding these: the Mosaic flyer/brochure announcing its second official release, meaning box sets four through seven, as well as showing the Monk and other two originals items issued. This thing should be worth a few bucks by itself! Also, a copy of the flip-open sheet sent to announce the gone-out-of-print, all-copies-sold status of the Monk set, and a copy of the recent mock-ticket card issued to promote the discovery and release of that great Monk/Coltrane night at Carnegie Hall.
