Mother Superior - MS Xmas 97 7" (self released TBSP-51001 U-46919M)
Completely rare 1997 Christmas 7" from Mother Superior, this one is so rare I could find no documentation of it on line, it is not in discogs, it is likely one of just a handful made for band friends. This one's a ghost.It's pretty silly with part of the record taken up by a fake DJ and his team trying to track down Mother Superior to interview them and songs by Mother Superior under fake names interspersed with the comic material.

Mother Superior is a Los Angeles based rock band, consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jim Wilson, bassist Marcus Blake and drummer Matt Tecu. In addition to playing live with the Rollins Band and U2 producer Daniel Lanois, the band has done session work with Daniel Lanois, Henry Rollins, Tony Visconti, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Emmylou Harris, Sparks, Anthrax, Wayne Kramer, Lemmy, George Clinton, Iggy Pop, Mike Patton, and Queens of the Stone Age and over the years have developed a first class reputation as musicians. On their own they have released eight studio albums.

Playing a combination of blues, soul, and classic American rock & roll, Mother Superior became a popular club act in the Los Angeles area during the late '90s. Guitarist Jim Wilson, bassist Marcus Blake, and drummer Jason Mackenroth released several independent CDs over that period, including 1996's The Heavy Soul Experience of Mother Superior, 1997's Kaleidoscope, and 1998's Deep. The latter record was produced by alt-rock icon Henry Rollins, who subsequently invited Mother Superior to join him as a new incarnation of the Rollins Band. After backing Rollins on 2000's Get Some Go Again, Mother Superior signed their own deal with Triple X and debuted for the label in 2001 with Mother Superior. The band soon found another benefactor in another icon of American hard rock, former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, who produced the group's 2002 album Sin and released it on his MuscleTone label. Kramer returned to the producer's chair for 2004's 13 Violets, which was issued on Mother Superior's own Top Beat imprint. Moanin' and Three Headed Dog arrived in 2005 and 2007, followed by a CD and LP vinyl compilation of new songs, rare live performances and previously unreleased versions of Mother Superior classics called Grande in 2008.

The Heavy Soul Experience of Mother Superior: This wide-open heavy blues collection is the first release from Los Angeles power trio Mother Superior. Fans unfamiliar with the group might liken them most to fellow '90s blues rockers the Black Crowes, but The Heavy Soul Experience of Mother Superior has a grittier sound that is stripped-down by comparison. It is more likely that the two groups share many '70s rock and soul influences rather than any similarities being the result of Mother Superior's appreciation of the Robinson brothers. The trio (consisting of Jim Wilson on guitars and vocals, Jason Mackenroth on drums, and bassist Marcus Blake) makes great use of Wilson's soulful voice and flailing guitar work that compliments their loosely pocketed rhythm section and solid material. The gospel-influenced rockers toward the end of The Heavy Soul Experience of Mother Superior ("Right on Time," "You Don't Miss Your Water") make up the most interesting final section of the disc with their powerful melodies and blues-poet lyrics. The more rocking numbers, like "The Wiggle," do more than hold their own, practically putting some legendary blues-influenced rockers like Bad Company to shame.
Kaleidoscope album: Recalling too many late-'60s and early-'70s British power blues acts to list or even remember, Mother Superior takes their cues from classic guitar bands like Humble Pie, Cream, and Deep Purple on this, their second full-length, self-released disc. Singer/guitarist Jim Wilson, drummer Jason Mackenroth, and bassist Marcus Blake get a little heavier and more psychedelic on 1997's Kaleidoscope, as numbers like "Got a Thing About You" recall a little Black Sabbath or even Montrose. Wilson's vocal work goes higher than that of the band's debut, adding an Ian Gillan-like edge to Mother Superior's already metal-leaning blues stomp. Standout tracks include howlers like "Where Are All the Rock N' Roll People" and "You Think It's a Challenge," as well as laid-back numbers like "Last One to Know." The vocal maturation of Wilson really puts Mother Superior over the top on Kaleidoscope, a collection of '90s retro power blues that is just about as good as this genre gets.
