Description
1st Single from Zappa / Mothers of Invention, this is the Australian only Verve/Astor release, which was withdrawn.
Astor Verve V 5122 1966
A How Could I Be Such A Fool
B Help! I’m A Rock (3rd Movement - It Can't Happen Here)
This copy is well played showing many scuffs and marks and wear on labels.
There are no jumps or skips and the two (great) songs play loud and clear, especially the A side.
Contrary to one of the quotes below this single comes in a rather colourful Astor Sleeve, which is
how it was found. The sleeve has creases and bumps as evident in the photos.
Tough to find much information, but from the good ole internet:
"The birth of Frank Zappa vinyl in Australia was probably 1966 due to the withdrawn pressing of
’How Could I Be Such A Fool?/ Help, I’m A Rock Verve V-5122 on the orange and yellow label (jazz series)
During this time Verve/MGM was being pressed and distributed through Astor. The following year saw distribution
change to Phonogram where all were the Black and Silver design.
Dispatched from Melbourne’s Astor pressing plant appears one box of 50-60 discs were sent to Adelaide for distribution.
Others probably were pressed as 30 to 35 have definitely been documented predominantly from Southern & Eastern States
in Australia. Whatever the pressing run it received, there seems no doubt it was very small.
The single is in either a brown or white generic factory sleeve."
and from milesago.com
Astor's shortlived licence to distribute the MGM and Verve labels led to at least one early Australian release for Frank
Zappa's group The Mothers, who recorded for Verve from 1966 to 1970. Astor never released the Mothers' debut
album in Australia (probably because it was a double-LP full of weird music) and they lost the MGM/Verve rights sometime
in 1967, but around March 1966 they did release a very limited quantity of the Mothers' single "How Could I Be Such a
Fool?" / "Help, I'm A Rock" (Verve V-5122). It is thought that only about one hundred copies were pressed and this
single -- which featured a distinctive orange-and-red label -- is now one of the rarest of all Zappa vinyl collectibles.
