DISCLAIMER! PLEASE NOTE:
Most of these early discs, are over 100 years old, and some have titles/lyrics that are considered rather Non-PC nowadays. Having made that quite clear, let’s look at this early and very interesting Skiffle, Bluesy-Jazz, Jazzy-Blues record.
It’s Jazz odd-ball Red McKenzie on paper-and-comb, with Eddie Lang on guitar, Harry Reser on banjo, and Dick Slevin on kazoo, appearing on a staggeringly rare UK Guardsman 7011 as The Colorado Kandy Kids.
They were, of course, an early version of The Mound City Blue Blowers, and this recording is from their appearance on US Brunswick/Vocalion as McKenzie’s Colorado Kids.
They’re performing two tunes, “Stretch It Boy” and “Best Black” both of which are listed on the label as “Negro Dance Record”.
This coupling was recorded on 26th or 27th of January 1925.
Both tunes are lively dance offerings, and Reser is giving it all he’s got.
Condition-wise, it plays OK... BUT it must’ve been left out in the sun at a “bright-young-thing’s” picnic about ninety five years ago, so there’s a few heat marks, which we’ve tried to show in the photographs. The VIDEO shows that it plays OK, and it even plays through on our ludicrously expensive transcription deck.
Be aware though, that this is not an archive/museum condition disc, although it’s great fun!
We reckon that it’s more or less a strong G++.
The less-than-perfect condition is the reason for the cheerfully low start-price.
