They owe much of their interest to people like the Rev. Charles Hopkins, who came to Cali- fornia in the 1930’s from the Brazos River area, and brought with him a rich heritage in traditional Negro music. The Rev. Hopkins inspired them to use their God-given voices topreserve the continuation of their culture.
