Description
Up for sale is a scarce 12 inch, 33 RPM vinyl mono jazz record that was inspired by the notorious 1930s and 1940s organized crime unit, Murder Incorporated. This record is not a movie soundtrack (even though there was a movie by the same name that was released in the same year that this LP appeared). It is instead a suite of very cool original instrumental compositions by an underappreciated jazz composer.

Composer and director Irving Joseph was born in the Bronx, New York in 1925. He studied piano with Adele Marcus and enlisted in the US Navy during World War II, where he served in a fleet band. After discharge, he was hired by Tommy Dorsey, but stayed for only a short time, before returning to New York. He became the pianist and chief accompanist for Lena Horne. He was a conductor for numerous Broadway musicals, including the early Dustin Hoffman vehicle, Jimmy Shine. Joseph also national touring companies of Chicago!, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Seesaw, among others. Beginning in 1975, he became the long time (almost 20 years) pianist for Rita Moreno. He also worked with Shirley Bassey, Patti Lupone, and even Frank Sinatra. He died in Brooklyn in 2000.
Time Records, Inc. was founded by Bob Shad whose early records (with Savoy and National Records), as a producer, included Charlie Parker! In 1951, while working at Mercury Records, he founded the EmArcy label. There, Shad produced records for Sarah Vaughan, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Eckstine, and other jazz greats. The Time label specialized in jazz and cocktail pop. Later, Shad would found Mainstream Records and would have the distinction of producing the very first albums every released for Janis Joplin and Ted Nugent.
