  • Recording Technique / Audio Quality: Historic monaural field recordings made by ethnomusicologist Willard Rhodes around 1949, utilizing the technology available at that time. The audio quality is characteristic of early field recordings, featuring inherent limitations in fidelity, dynamic range, and clarity compared to modern studio recordings. Original recordings were likely captured on equipment typical of the era, such as wire recorders or early portable disc cutters. The album's value lies in its significant ethnographic and historical importance, not its technical audio perfection.
  • Vinyl Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) play graded *Clean, glossy vinyl displaying a few light superficial fine-line marks that had little impact on the overall sound. The sound quality is definitely above average for a historical non-commercial field recording. All performances are clear and highly listenable, but due to the field recording environment, some level of ambient noise is present.
  • Cover Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) *Softer textured jacket is in solid condition with some minor shelf wear. There is some corner wear, light seam wear with open seams @1-2" on rh top & bottom corners. Sticker peel on top lh front with some very light discoloration.
  • Booklets: Included are (2) original booklets, both in Near Mint condition - the 8-page booklet "Music of the Sioux and Navajo" and a 6-page booklet " Ethnic Dance In The Integrated Curriculum"
  • Notes: This 1949 album was recorded in Indian Communities in 1949 with the cooperation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The selections are from the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and The Diné (Navajo) peoples of the Southwest. Sioux music is often characterized by powerful drumming and vocal performances, central to various social and ceremonial events. (Sun Dance, Omaha Dance, Rabbit Dance, Peyote Cult Song, Honoring Songs). Navajo music is also deeply tied to ceremony and daily life, utilizing unique instruments and vocal styles (Night Chant (Yei-Be-Chai), Songs and chants from the "Nightway" healing ceremony, Corn Grinding Song, Squaw Dance (or War Dance), Popular social songs, Silversmith's Song, Riding Song/Song of Happiness). Insturments heard are Anvils, Basket drum, Bells, Chorus, Drum, Drums, Flute, Harmonica, Lead vocals, Rattle, Whistle. Language(s) heard are Lakota (Lakȟótiyapi), Navajo (Diné Bizaad). Recorded By Willard Rhodes who provides an introductory essay and track notes on the 8-page booklet.

GRADING STANDARDS: (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way.  Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident. 
(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear. 
(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming. 
(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
