Nancy Priddy -- You've Come This Way Before LP
Original 1968 stereo release on Dot Records (17164), with gatefold sleeve.Both funky and folky psych-rock album from the mother of actress Christina Applegate (check out "Christina's World").
Review at musictaste.com:Shakespearean actress and mother of Christina Applegate, the lovely Ms. Priddy only made this one album, but what an album it is. The title track, shows her to be somewhat more than an ingenue. Over a stark arrangement centered around a spare bassline and DJ-enticing drum break, she sings lyrics far beyond the usual pop-romantic platitudes. Why hasn't this fantastic record been reissued yet?

The album cover seems like a modeling portfolio. She’s more famous for having a daughter who played a bimbo on TV than for anything she did herself. Based on this information, you probably wouldn’t have very high hopes for this album, would you? Well, then, it’ll be a very pleasant surprise. Nancy has a versatile, rich voice, an adventurous songwriting hand, and a sympathetic backing band. Even the liner notes are cool. Whether she was influenced by the psychedelic music around her (note that she attended Oberlin College with Ant Trip Ceremony!) or not, she certainly had an open mind about music as an art form. There are elements of folk, pop, soul, gospel, even children’s music here. Not all of it works, but you have to give her credit for the theremin (or Moog?) on “On the Other Side of the River” or the many different twists and turns in the 6-minute “Mystic Lady.” The album’s best songs are probably the soulful title song (catchy echoey riff), the sly “We Could Have It All,” and the girl group-like “My Friend Frank,” but they’re all enhanced by the experiments around them. This album’s mix of styles reminds me somewhat of a more mainstream album of its time, BREAKOUT, by Lori Burton, something I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone who’s interested in albums by female songwriters. YOU’VE COME THIS WAY BEFORE isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s an interesting, creative album that rewards multiple listens and deserves a reissue. 7 ½ out of 10.
