Another venture by musicians into the production and selling of their own recordings is Otic Records (Southbury, Conn. 06488). One of its participants, vib1st‐pianist Bobby Naughton, explains that “Otic is a collective in which all the musicians, the engineer, and the studio share in the profits.” Although the label so far has only two releases, it, has arranged for distribution in Europe and Japan. In this country, Otic is best secured by mail.

Nature's Consort, on Otic, is a fascinating collaboration between Naughton (piano only) and some of the most skillful musicians in all of what I suppose can be called post‐modern jazz. They are Mark Whitecage (winds), James Duboise (brass), Mario Pavone (bass), and Laurence Cook (percussion). Theirs is high‐risk improvisation, dependent on unfailing attentiveness and the ability to anticipate each other. Those qualities lacking, a soloist will suddenly saundand feel—as if he has fallen shaft.

The musicians on “Nature's Consort” more than survive the challenge. In some of the passages, more over, there is a subtlety of imaginative interplay on all levels — melodic, textural, rhythmic — which indicates again that so‐called “freeform” music requires much judicious instantaneous editing to make even its own kind of sense.

On that first Otic release, all the pieces are by Naughton. The label's second effort, Understanding, has four compositions by Naughton and four by Carla Bley. The immediate accessibility of many of her works is sometimes deceptive because there's a lot more going on structurally than first appears. In any case, Carla Bley is well and probingly served this album.

On some of the tracks, Naughton plays vibes. It is an instrument I can easily resist unless played by Red Norvo, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson and a few others; but Naughton, as the argot puts it, is something else. I did not know the instrument is capable of that many nuances of color and phrasing and time‐bending. His colleagues of “Understanding,” which is ‘often even more seriously playful than “Nature's Consort,” include Whiec.age again (flute and basset horn) and Perry Robinson, one of the exceedingly few clarinetists of conse quence in post‐swing jazz. have never understood why this dearth of younger clarinetists exists because in all previous periods of jazz, the clarinet was an important front‐line instrument — from Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone to Fats Fazola and Pee Wee Russell. (No, I did not forget ‘to include Benny Goodman, a fine craftsman but no urgently seizing original force).

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with the original insert with Nat Hentoff quote.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
