Description
NAUGHTON AND GOLD - IN SEARCH OF THE LOCH NESS MONSTER
Playtested, 100%
Disc grading - Acceptable
From the outset it is obvious that this disc has an edge chip, and - if you check the pictures - you will see that there is a certain amount of 'bowl shaped' warping, concave on one side and convex, the other.
Neither of these issue, edge chip nor warping interfere with the playback of the disc.
If you are precise about where you place the needle on the disc you will lose none of the audio, and the sound is not affected by the unavoidable 'rise and fall' of the disc., so check the pictures out before you get ready to enjoy a super-rare, extremely collectible example of 1930's British comedy...
...and that's exactly what it is...it's an extremely rare original UK Decca 78rpm, featuring a pair of Scottish comedians on the loose around Loch Ness, encountering the legendary Nessie and 6 minutes of lively 1930's humorous shenanigans ensue...
Jokes arrive in rapid succession, some are definitely regional, some extend to UK life of the era, jokes about beer, cigarettes and soccer, and some - if you like jokes about 'The Wife' - are truly international and, of course, never sound dated...
The Monster joins in the fun and games, giving as good as he gets, (at least, he sounds like a man...) there's some joint singing along, too, and the best joke is the one about the bagpipes, still, genuinely, makes you laugh out loud 80+ years later...
This disc has, it seems, more or less vanished in the mists of time, extensive and exhaustive on-line searching has revealed a vague passing reference to it in a book and there's a video to watch, in the usual place...
Various pictures uploaded, disc front and rear and a view of each of the label details, plus - as best I can - some views of the condition of the disc.
You are looking at a listing for an item that is in excess of 80 years old. Surface noise and signs of antiquity, either visually or on playback are to be expected.
Use the 'Scroll Over' feature for meticulous scrutiny of the condition of the item.

Please read the record grading guide below and familiarize yourself with the grades used and be aware of the full description in all aspects.
I strive to grade fairly, and have never sold a record without listening to it first.
Visual grading is not an option at all.
This approx. 80 year old 78rpm disc I have graded as being in Acceptable condition.
The edge chip, as noted above, does not extend into the playing area.
Slight warping of the disc, a gentle 'rise and fall', having no audio impact at all.
Playback itself is graded as Very Good, it's an 80 year old shellac disc and both sides play through with no jumping, skipping or any other audio horrors.
There are the usual minor hairline surface marks that any 78 of this vintage would accumulate over the passage of time, but they are mainly visual and have no real impact on playback.
There is the expected low-level and generally non-intrusive surface noise, typically common to any used shellac disc of this vintage, and which shouldn't spoil your authentic listening experience!
A perfectly acceptable shellac-to-mp3 transfer, with a suitable turntable. Keep it real but in a digital way!
The labels are in good condition, with no major defects, see close-up pictures uploaded.
Track title - two parts, one per side.
- Naughton & Gold In Search of the "Loch Ness Monster" introducing the "Loch Ness Monster" himself singing "I'm The Monster of Loch Ness" With Harry Hudson and His Radio Band.
Any questions, email and I'll help if I can.
Rare item, there's not even much about it online, it's a real piece of history, in all sorts of ways, try and find another like it!
Thanks for looking!

GRADING GUIDE FOR 78rpm DISCS
NM Nearly Mint, but has been played. No visible signs of wear or damage.
EX+ Plays like new, with few signs of handling. Minor scuffs visible.
EX Very shiny, nearly new looking. No visible signs of wear, inaudible scuffs and scratches.
VG++ Still shiny, but without the lustre of a new record. A few light scratches. Light wear. No skipping or sticking passages.
VG+ Above average, undeniably vintage condition 78 in which scuffs and general use have dulled the finish of the disc. Wear is moderate, but playback is not overly affected, and is free from distortion. Light surface noise, commensurate with age. No skipping or sticking passages.
VG Moderate, even wear throughout, still very playable. Surface noise and scratches, audible but not intrusive.
Good++ Quite playable still, distortion on playback due to surface noise. Music remains loud, in most passages, with scratches and surface noise evident but below music level.
Good+ Serviceable and acceptable playback. Music may sound muffled in some sections. Noticeably heavier scratches and surface marks.
Good Quite obviously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.
Good- Music still prominent, with wear and scratches extensive.
Fair Most of music remains audible over continual surface noise, although the vintage 78 experience is an uncomfortable affair. Collection filler material.
Poor Unplayable, and most definitely of interest only to the most dedicated...
