Label/Format: Acta with semi-shiny quite smooth surfaces with deep ring ridge. This a genuine very first press issue with two song titles above the spindle hole. The second and only other version had just one song title above the hole.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh, bright and attractive with only a tiny very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This rare record appears hardly played.

Brief Info: A classic American psychedelic band similar to Jefferson Airplane, but never to share the success of the far more familiar band, even though they toured with major acts of the time that included The Who and Deep Purple. Indeed, this was a one-off album – a second was made, but never issued due the small Acta label folding. This album is something of a ‘lost’ classic, available briefly, selling in very small numbers and lost in the mist-of-time. Only available in the United States and Canada and seldom seen elsewhere. Clearly a small few were exported to the UK, almost all of which had a small punch-hole in the cover (and some much more). This superb copy still has the main cover inside its original shrink wrapping, just opened on the right side for record access with most of the cover still enclosed, hence in superb condition. The punch hole is very small and quite discrete near the top right corner. With the record appearing hardly played, all but one song plays superbly, the other, ‘Please Leave Me Along’, which closes side one, has a little inherent, and very brief crackle within the pressing. Acta was only a very small label, and this album is often known to have pressing issues, but this one has almost escaped. So a superb and highly collectable, rare album that will prove very difficult to find better. Musically brilliant and one of the classic American psych albums of the late 1960s with lovely vocals from Dyan Hoffman. With such high potential, this band should have made it big – alas, and sadly, not to be.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): not taking into account of the very small, neat punch-hole. Few examples that made the trip to the UK will not have them. These were either deletion or tax paid punches and are almost expected on most imported non-EU albums at this time. A single unlaminated format with gentle sheen on the front, the back has the usual paste-on panel with a matt finish. Printed and made in the United States and includes the basic plain white inner sleeve that has the matching punch-hole. As stated, the cover remains inside its original shrink wrapping, opened on the right side for record access.

Cover Front & Back: The almost mandatory punch-hole apart, both front and back appear practically as-made. A small piece of the shrink wrapping is lost on the front top right, but even this exposed piece of the cover has no wear or grubbiness. The one owner also protected this cover inside a protective sleeve and both side are immaculate, totally unaged, worn or creased. They rarely get seen better than this, especially outside America.

Top Edge: The right end of the top edge is exposed by a little over an inch as the wrap has split, any trace or rubbing to this area is minimal and light, the rest is perfect. It remains very straight and appears unsplit.

Bottom Edge: Immaculate and fully covered by the wrapping, again it appears unsplit.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp and appearing as-made. American covers were made with thicker card and not quite as sharp as European ones.

Spine and Text: Looks perfect again and still very straight, totally covered by the wrapping.

Corners: A very small rub to the top right which is exposed, all others protected and perfect with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Now around 50-years-old and still inside its original plastic wrapping which has done a fantastic job in preserving this rare cover. American covers are delicate with brittle edges and wear-prone surfaces, to find this lost classic in this amazingly preserved condition is near remarkable. This a piece of rare beauty, it should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a very basic plain white unlined inner which has a crease to one corner and the matching punch-hole near one corner. A little darkened with age and a couple of tiny nicks on one window circles. More unusually, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, this appears hardly played. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks few and very light as seen critically under bright light. A fine surface mark on side one that does nothing, anything else little and light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even register. American records tend to mark more easily than European ones, the viny always seem a little ‘softer’, and imported records seldom avoid minor marks as the barest minimum. This is an outstanding vintage record, make no mistake, few will even get close to it these days. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant one-off album, that may still be unfamiliar to many outside the United States, plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar a little, brief inherent crackle on the final song on side one. That purely within the pressing, all other song play little short of perfectly with clear, detailed and full-on sound. Acta, a very small and briefly available label, is known to have pressing issues and this album could be something of a lottery. So given the known facts, this is really a very impressive copy. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and given the inconsistent traits of this album, I consider this a near exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing, bar that brief crackle, again, purely in the pressing, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. These are rarely seen or offered, especially in the UK, and it will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless absolute perfection is mandatory – and very good luck finding one of those.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
