Label Conditions: Both in lovely condition: very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: RSLP 6383.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: An incredible 165 grams. A massive first pressing. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as an original, complete with insert and a superb cover. A delicate title that needs to be found in prime condition and rarely does it show like this. One of the greats in age defying condition, such an example is rare. Also this RSLP album was not available for very long. The catalogue number was changed very soon after issue to the new Kinney K- number making the genuine originals elusive and prized. The reissues became much thinner pressed, flimsy and lightweight in comparison.

Brief Info: Neil Young’s third album and many regard it as his very best and for many years now it’s been regarded as a masterpiece. Issued in August 1970 and being this late in that year, it was never issued on the tri-coloured Reprise label. A wonderful set that blends rock with country, it introduces his fans to Nils Lofgren whose presence is strong. This is a very cohesive work and was a prolific time for a man who was also working with Dave Crosby, Steve Stills and Graham Nash. Over the years, this landmark album, that introduced him to a much wider audience, has lost none of its power and charm and is still highly sort-after in top conditions as an original. This is a lovely looking and playing all-round copy, never an easy one with worn out covers, crackly records and the insert ripped to shreds or missing altogether. This is real fine and if you seek a UK original, well this will take a fair amount of beating.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ an unlaminated gatefold format and guaranteed original with the RSLP number printed on the front, back, inside the centrefold and also on the spine. – I always reitterate beware of Kinney printings being offered as ‘originals’, they are NOT. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd, London.

Cover Front: Very clean and highly attractive with very little traces of wear at all. Very dark and unfaded with hardly a crease to be seen. Barely any rubbing to the vulnerable surfaces apart from the cornertips. One small pressmark barely shows with normal viewing. This somewhat eerie semi-silouette cover will be very hard to find better with the prized RSLP number. Note also that creepy small character passing the opposite way to Young. David Lynch would approve.

Cover Back: The back is even better which is little short of remarkable given the sheer weight of this massive pressing. There is NO ringwear or even a pressmark and that is almost unbelievable and very few will appear like this. Again barely a crease or mark to be seen and both the exposed faces will rarely be seen much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine, exactly as made and looking fantastic.

Top Edges: Light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above but more moderate towards the vulnerable ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: A very nice and hardly worn spine too: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and there is barely any traces of wear to the vulnerable unprotected surfaces. Minor and tiny rubs to the very ends only - the least that could realistically be expected.

Corners: The corners have rubbed, mostly on the bottom right, the spine has little. Mostly fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Minus the mainly light edge rubs, this would be in the Mint(-) bracket and I feel sure many would grade as such on this one. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Insert: Mint(-) with the lyrics. Printed on just one side, the white back side has no signs of mounting. Although a poster style insert, this was never made for displaying and it remains in a totally unmounted condition. Quite frankly it almost looks like brand new, fresh, clean and the foldlines solid and totally unstressed. The edges are razor sharp and there are no additional creases or marks to the front. The back is clean also with a possible light trace of a stain (but look very hard). This vintage insert will also take a lot of beating and it will truly remind of being new. The original ‘foreign patents pending’ polylined inner is also included. Around EX- with some crumpling but no edge splits and a clean neat window.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ with just a faint and totally harmless paper scuff on side one, side two is even better and has little to fault. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed at a very impressive 165 grams. Way over average for this time and heavier than many early Beatles albums. A soon as I picked up this record I knew this was something quite exceptional even before putting on the scales. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by very fine sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark record within Young’s classic catalogue plays up to and even exceeds its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on this title), all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Deep in the bass frequencies, the early pressings have real depth and punch. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the odd trace on the utmost quiet segment but for a delicate album this age, it will take something remarkable to better it. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly demanding album. I have heard several copies of this that crackle or clip, a trait not so unusual on this title and when you hear a clean copy it’s one to be treasured. This title seems highly intolerant of needle abuse and only the most cherished copies survive with lovely clean sound. Even into the new decade, such stereo records were still played and wrecked on mono record players, most less than worthy to preserve those delicate grooves. The information often stripped and worn away rendering crackle, high frequency clipping and even distortion – this gem has never been subjected to such traumas and it still sounds gorgeous, just the way the modern audiophile collector want them. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Neil Young remains an analogue connoisseur and he would indeed be proud to listen to this copy. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better as an original RSLP UK pressing and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
