Whilst Neil Young's adamant refusal to reissue Time Fades Away remains baffling, I think most fans who've heard it understand why Journey Through the Past hasn't had a new release; it's such a bizarre, messy album. Let's do a quick rundown of the contents: the first side comprises some picks from Neil's band work in Buffalo Springfield and CSNY, though better versions of all songs presented exist. Side B offers a decent CSNY live version of Southern Man and a few fascinating "making of" snippets from Harvest. Side C has a fucking excellent side-long version of Words. Side D is an utter oddity, presenting as it does some audio of a dumb conversation Neil had with a stoned person, a bunch of songs by people who aren't Neil, and a second-tier Neil song (Soldier). The collection as a whole makes no more sense than the accompanying film did and is a somewhat frustrating grab-bag of really neat tracks and utter pointlessness.

Neil Young recorded this eclectic mess in late 1972 and conceived it as an original soundtrack for an ill-fated documentary of the same name.. In addition to overcoming personal challenges of all kinds, he also reflected on this album a host of social ills that affected America circa Watergate era, and the cover showing a bunch of grand knights of the KKK amply illustrates the point. And, as of Today, March 24, 2019, it is official: there are now only two (2) albums uncle Neil elected not to release on CD: this one, and his 1973 “Time Fades Away”. I think it is a safe bet that we will never – ever – see these two albums reissued on CD.  The result: this great album has been unavailable in any way, manner or format in almost quarter of a century!!!. SOME OF THE SONGS FROM THIS ALBUM, SUCH AS THE ALMOST-15-MINUTE LONG "WORDS" ARE UNAVAILABLE ON ANY OTHER NEIL YOUNG ALBUM, OR IN ANY OTHER FORMAT WHATSOEVER!!! . The musicians include CSN&Y, Buffalo Springfield, Stray Gators, Tony and Susan Alamo Christian Foundation and Chorus, as well as , of course, Neil Young solo. The songs are: For what it's worth / Mr. Soul - Rock'n'Roll woman - Find the cost of Freedom - Ohio - Southern Man - Are you ready for the country - Let me call you sweetheart - Alabama - Words - God Bless America - Relativity invitation - Handel's Messiah - King of Kings - Soldier Let's go away for awhile.

(d)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
