Description

HERE'S a great side by PAUL HOWARD AND HIS QUALITY SERENADERS, from their second-to-last Victor session in February, 1930: "NEW KINDA BLUES." As usual for this band, it's an innovative, amazing hot arrangement, flawlessly executed.  It features a terrific scat vocal by drummer and future Jazz superstar LIONEL HAMPTON, and some great trombone by LAWRENCE BROWN, who would soon become a unique voice in Duke Ellington's orchestra.

The flip side is "SADIE THE SHAKER" - yet another entry in the "Minnie the Moocher" saga! - played hotly by JEAN CALLOWAY AND HER ORCHESTRA - actually a trans-gender pseudonym for GENE KARDOS AND HIS ORCHESTRA.

This original "Full-Colour Nipper" 1930 HMV B.6291** is in beautiful EE+ condition.  Master pressed on both sides. It's the only other release of these titles, besides the fabulously rare Victors!

** As you can see, this record was in an English HMV album titled, "CONNOISSEUR'S ALBUM OF HOT RHYTHM MUSIC," in which it was sides 11 and 12.  I am intrigued! What were the other ten sides? I sleuthed around in my electronic Rust Jazz, and found them!:

B-6286   Rocky Road / You’re Driving Me Crazy (McKinney’s Cotton Pickers)

B-6287  Poor Old Joe (Fletcher Henderson Orch.)/ Crying and Sighing (McKinney’s Cotton Pickers)

B-6288   Rockin’ Chair (Hoagy Carmichael Orch.) / Bugle Call Blues (Jack Pettis & his Pets)

B-6289   Tiger Rag (Washboard Rhythm Kings) / Kazoo Moan (Washboard Serenaders)

B-6290   Heebie Jeebies (Mills Blue Rhythm Band) / Really Blue (Joe Venuti’s Blue Four)

B-6291   New Kinda Blues (Paul Howard Quality Serenaders) / Sadie the Shaker (Jean Calloway Orch.)

NICE! I assume these six records were housed in a handsome six-pocket HMV cover, with informative notes. This all would have been in about 1933.  I've never seen it, but some of you Brit collectors must have.  C'mon! Cough it up!

*****

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.

An Unsolicited Testimonial!: "Superbatone is one of the coolest people on eBay - seriously. An excellent source for music, knowledge, and whimsy, and an asset to the community who cares about music and its preservation. It goes without saying that he is an expert in all facets surrounding 78’s and their content."

And another:  “Descriptions as passionate and informative as superbatone’s are commensurate with what you receive: beautiful records, fast service - and even his writing on the shipping box is interesting, artistic, and indicative of the care taken for these records and to transport them safely.”
