NEXT EXIT – BREAKAWAY / I’M THE ONLY ONE (WARNER BROS 7220) (PROMO) (VG+)

From Kansas City, Missouri, this group formed in 1959 and released four singles as The Fabulous Four in the 64/66 period.  By 1967 they had an offer to contribute a song to a movie soundtrack, called Butterflies Are Free.  The band was flown to New York and the session for this 45 was produced by another band The Tokens, who wrote the song I’m The Only One, which turned out to be a genuine sunshine-pop classic with truly amazing Beach Boys style harmonies.  Somehow in the shuffle, they opted to change their name to Next Exit for this recording.  The band waited diligently for the movie to come out in 1968 and were quite disappointed when just one verse of I’m The Only One, sung by one of the cast members on an acoustic guitar was the only reference to their recording included in the movie.  But that interesting story doesn’t really change the demand for this 45 since the flip side, Breakaway, is certainly worth a listen as well.  This song was penned by prolific NY songwriters Brute Force and Paul Kahan and features some trippy effects on the vocals and is an incredible composition in its own right.  After this perceived “failed” effort with the movie business, the band morphed into a band called Pretty in 1969 and recorded an entire LP worth of tracks in an actual cave in Missouri.  Only one single was released from this heavy psychedelic session in 1970 and it appears that the remaining tracks have never been formally released yet.  This promo version of the Next Exit 45 is in very good condition, graded as VG+. GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
