Água do Céu – Pássaro is the first solo album by Brazilian singer Ney Matogrosso, released in 1975, after his departure from Secos e Molhados the previous year, due to artistic and administrative differences with the band. More experimental, the album features the production of the Italian-Argentinean Billy Bond and the participation of the virtuosos Claudio Gabis (guitar), Jorge Omar (guitar), Bruce Henry (bass), Marcio Montarroyos (trumpet, piano), Sergio Rosadas ( flute, tenor sax), Chacao (percussion) and Elber Bedaque (drums).
Along with the LP, the original disc included a compact with the tracks As Ilhas and 1964 (II), recorded in Italy with the composer and bandeoneonist Astor Piazolla. In the double edition re-released by Três Selos, these two songs appear on side D of the album.
In part of the repertoire, Ney recalls his childhood and adolescence, in the 40s and 50s, with hits from Rádio Nacional and chanchada tracks he saw in the cinema. The rest is new for the time, with tracks composed by his own friends and by renowned composers, such as Milton Nascimento (who offered him Bodas, in partnership with Ruy Guerra). “Milton gave me that song where it’s never quite clear who is telling this story: whether it’s a man or a woman, about a person of rare beauty who got off a ship with a cannon, in a port.” João Bosco, in turn, gave him Corsário. The most controversial of the repertoire, Açúcar candy, was shown to him by Sueli Costa, who composed it based on the verses of the poet Tite de Lemos.
