Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are an Australian alternative rock band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 1983 by frontman Nick Cave, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey and guitarist Blixa Bargeld. The band has included international personnel throughout its career and currently includes Cave, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn P. Casey, keyboardist Conway Savage, and percussionists Thomas Wydler andJim Sclavunos.

The band was founded after the demise of Cave and Harvey's former group, The Birthday Party. Alternating from the noise rock roots of their contemporaries, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have a distinctive take on alternative rock that has been influenced by various genres, including punk rock, gothic rock, no wave and blues. Their early material—From Her to Eternity (1984), The Firstborn Is Dead (1985), Your Funeral... My Trial (1986) and Tender Prey (1988)—had a primarily post-punk sound; however, as the band progressed, they began to incorporate more refined singer-songwriter elements. Their latest release, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (2008), also experimented with garage rock, inspired by their side project Grinderman.

They are best known for "Where the Wild Roses Grow", a collaborative single with Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue from their ninth studio album,Murder Ballads (1996). The song was an international commercial and critical success, giving them exposure in pop charts; the band also has a large cult following, due to their extensive back catalogue of fourteen studio albums and frequent international touring.

From Her to Eternity is the debut album released by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in 1984. The title is a pun on the book/movie From Here to Eternity.

After the breakup of Nick Cave's former band The Birthday Party, Cave formed a new project with former band member Mick Harvey. Cave and Harvey were joined by a semi-fluid group of bandmates, initially including Einstürzende Neubauten member Blixa Bargeld on guitar, Hugo Race on guitar, and formerMagazine member Barry Adamson on guitar, bass, and piano. After some studio work, the band's premiere public performance was held on New Year's Eve, 1983 in Melbourne, under the name "Nick Cave - Man Or Myth?", followed by a tour.[1] The band then briefly called themselves "Nick Cave and the Cavemen" before adopting the "Bad Seeds" moniker, in reference to the final Birthday Party release, The Bad Seed EP.

The majority of the album was recorded at Trident Studios in London in March 1984. "Saint Huck", "Wings off Flies" and "A Box for Black Paul" were recorded at The Garden between September and October 1983. The band is also seen playing a live performance of the title track in the 1987 Wim Wendersfilm Wings of Desire. It was recorded at Hansa Studio, Berlin in February 1987.

From Her to Eternity received very positive acclaim upon its release, with Chris Long of BBC Music describing it as "imperfect, visceral, exciting and, ultimately, classic."[6]
